Beautifully Crafted NZ Pounamu Jewellery

How Pounamu Was Formed

Pounamu formed naturally deep beneath the earth's surface millions of years ago through intense heat, pressure, and mineral-rich fluids. As the Southern Alps rose, these deposits were brought closer to the surface. Over time, glaciers and fast-flowing West Coast rivers released the stone from the surrounding rock, carrying it into riverbeds where it can still be found today. This remarkable geological journey, combined with its deep cultural significance, makes pounamu one of Aotearoa New Zealand's most treasured taonga.

Carved on the West Coast, Te Wai Pounamu, the home of NZ Pounamu
